A first time tragic peruser who expects normal closure will be astonished by the heartbreaking occasions in the tales. Authors like Yevgeny Zamyatin, H. G. Wells, Eugene Luther, and so on., had composed numerous idealistic and tragic stories. Yevgeny Zamyatin's WE was finished in 1920 and distributed in English in the year 1924. It's an incongruity or can be said as extremist conditions won in Russia forestalled Zamyatin to discharge his book in his own nation until 1952, fifteen years after Zamyatin's demise. The book depicts how life would resemble in an authoritarian state. It likewise mirrors the creator's view on Russia, which was represented by socialists under the initiative of Stalin. In this tragic story the world is under an extremist state and was called as One State. This One State is controlled under the fascism of one who was called as Benefactor. In this world nobody has a name, everybody is perceived by their distinguishing proof numbers. Every individual tends to other by their number and consistently work as one. In One state everything is made of glass including structures, devices and hardware. There is no security for One state's residents. Each building is made of this equivalent glass, empowering any conduct not prohibited by the Table of Hours, the consecrated content of the One State, to be effectively observed and detailed (Mirra Ginsburg, 1972). In this glass-encased city of completely straight lines, anonymous numbers (people are perceived by their assignments) - overcomers of an overwhelming war - live out lives without enthusiasm and imagination. A person by the number D-503 likewise carries on with a similar life as others and is boss manufacturer of the One state's lofty undertaking called as Integral. Indispensable is a uber venture, which includes in the development of a spaceship that will be utilized to investigate external planets and bring them under the administration of Benefactor. A system of Guardians continually screens the exercises of One state's residents. The Guardians duty is to check unpredictable conduct of a person. Out of this state is a green wilderness where radicals dwell and D-503 begins to look all starry eyed at a lady I-330 who works with the renegades. D-503's inflexibly organized life develops in intricacy as he meets I-330, a wildly predominant lady who lures him, first from his sweetheart O-90, at that point from his cherished One State (Mirra Ginsburg, 1972). This new relationship destroys his inner voice and he no longer thinks straight. He turns out to be so engaged with the renegades that he goes along with them against One state. George Orwell's 1984 is another tragic story that closes in a lamentable note. The story occurred in London in the year 1984. The story spins around the life of Winston who lives in London, which is a piece of Oceania. Oceania is one of the three nations that exist on the planet; the other two are Eurasia and Eastasia. These three nations are consistently at war. Oceania is an extremist state under the administration of Big Brother and severe oversight is executed all through the nation. Winston is appalled with his abused life and furtively aches to join the famous Brotherhood, an alleged gathering of underground revolutionaries plan on ousting the administration (George Orwell, 1949). Winston goes gaga for Julia. Julia detests internal gathering as much as Winston does. This type of genetic modification has proven to be quite successful and has been used for many generations. Presently scientists are genetically modifying organisms in order to produce more desirable traits. Genetically modified organisms (GMO), are organisms that have a genome that has been engineered in a laboratory in order to produce desired biological products or to express a desired physiological trait (Diaz 2014). Scientists are able to accomplish this type of genetic modification through recombinant DNA technology and reproductive cloning. Reproductive cloning uses technology to produce offspring of an organism that is genetically identical to the parent. They do this by transferring a donor nucleus into the enucleated cytoplasm of the host egg (Diaz 2014). Recombinant DNA technology involves inserting one or more individual genes into the DNA of a separa te species (Diaz 2014). GMOs have become widely used in many different areas of society, three of which are animals, agriculture, and for the advancement of human health. Duck Dynasty focuses on a reality television hit on AE Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm. Duck Dynastyââ¬â¢s third season ââ¬Ës final episode brought in a 9. 6 million in viewers compared to American Idol, who had a 3. million in viewers in their last episode (James Hibber) . That makes Duck Dynasty the highest viewed reality television show. Phil Robertson established the family business. He crafted the first duck call in 1973, In a small run down shed out back of his home in Louisiana. Willie, Phil sââ¬â¢ son with his business degree took and turned the small low budgeted operation and turned it in to a multimillion-dollar business the Duck Commander. Before the guys of Robertson family starter the Duck Commander business, they filmed their own hunts and sold them on video tapes. The Robertson family was also on the outdoor channel on a show called ââ¬Å"BENELI PRESENTS DUCK COMMANDERâ⬠back in the 80ââ¬â¢s. Phil told ABC news â⬠We use to have a reality show but it was just a bunch of rednecks shooting duckâ⬠. Patriarch Phil and Willie are only two of the Dynastyââ¬â¢s family members. Jase titled(Willies brother)and Jep(Willies other brother) also help with the family business. Jase is the COO of the company he he runs the manufacturing of the parts, Jase fabricates the calls making sure each one is finely hand tuned. Jase is always trying to pull some kind of shenanigan over Willies head and trying to get out of work. His motto is duck hunting, family, and god. Jep helps put the duck calls together, he is the editor and cameraman for the family business. He is able to think like a hunter behind the camera to catch excellent footage for their Duck Men DVD. Jep is Miss Kay baby . Miss Kay, Philââ¬â¢s wife is the head of the family. What Miss Kay says goes. Miss Kay is a little bit of aunt Bee and a hint of Roseann to spice thing up. She thinks her cooking is a gift and should be shared,so most nights she will cook up a big feast for the whole family, sometimes for the entire neighbor hood. Wives of Jase, Willie and Jep have to infuse a bit of sanity to the proceedings. Then we have Si the crazy uncle, Philââ¬â¢s youngest brother and best friend . Si has the job of fashioning the reeds, the most important part of a duck call is the reed its what makes the duck sound. Si is a Vietnam war vet who loves to tell crazy unbelievable stories and say thing like ââ¬Å"HEYâ⬠ADN ââ¬Å"JACKâ⬠. Duck Dynasty is part of up coming category titled Redneck television thrown in to the mass of My Redneck Vacation , But the twoââ¬â¢s comparisons can can only go so far. Yes both shows have southern accents and redneck past times. Redneck vacation focuses on an extended southern family, that takes their southern hospitality and traditions to the uppity lifestyle of the Hamptons, but still highlights on how they can manage to get along despite the differences in culture. Redneck vacation has salty language ,violence, and drinking is visible . The show makes fun of rednecks as opposed to showing its lifestyle. Duck Dynasty also features the family being a little out of the ordinary to most of its viewers tuning in. We watch the Robertsonââ¬â¢s tromp threw the backwoods hunting duck, fishing, blowing tings up like beaver damns. But what saves Duck Dynasty from the Redneck Vacation fate, Is Dynastyââ¬â¢s characters are in on the joke so that no one is getting hurt. Some of the situations at hand may seem to be fashioned for television and everyone know it and seem to play their positions well. As you watch the show you might fall down laughing at the familyââ¬â¢s redneck phenomena, but you may also be a little jealous of them . Tony, the main character, a mechanical illustrator by profession, is a son of two Japanese parents. He grew up alone with a caretaker in his tender age since his mother had died a few days after he was born.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Tony Takitani specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More His father, a jazz musician, was never at home since he travelled a lot with his jazz band. This paper seeks to provide a critical analysis and comparison of the film and the novel Tony Takitani. The paper also highlights the film techniques that have been employed by the movie. Tony, who becomes a successful draughtsman, lives alone in his spacious apartment, a solitude environment that captures the audience attention. In his apartment, the director Ichikawa Jun captures a spacious apartment with a huge doorway and a window emph asizing unutilized space. This gives the audience a clear picture of a visible world that characterized Tonyââ¬â¢s isolation (Murakami 2002). Tonyââ¬â¢s loneliness begins in his childhood, growing up without a mother who died shortly after he was born. He also grew up without his father, a much travelled jazz musician who was always out for his music performance. In school, his different name isolates him from his peers since it sounds American. His only consolation is his ability to produce drawings, unique in nature and with unbelievable accuracy. This talent seems to compensate his loneliness, a life he had no ability to control. He later owes his success to this talent, in college and later in his career (Ichikawa 2004). Though Tonyââ¬â¢s emptiness lingers throughout the movie, he appears unaware of his emptiness. At the beginning of the movie, the audience witness him say that he never thought he was especially lonely. Tonyââ¬â¢s lack of awareness is presented clear ly in the film, and makes his loneliness to be especially poignant. Later when he meets Eiko, who becomes his wife, he begins to understand and fear his inner solitude. Eiko, a young beautiful lady, is a ââ¬Å"shopaholicâ⬠who spends much of her time shopping for expensive clothes. She has a strange inclination to expensive designer clothes that even a spare room is converted into a wardrobe to accommodate her collections. At the beginning, Tony is mysteriously attracted by the relationship that Eiko shares with her wardrobe.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Later, he is intensely disturbed by her compulsive buying. He tells her to control her voracious desire for new clothes, a move that is emotionally welcomed by his wife. However, this ends up in a disastrous consequence t hat ends her life (Ichikawa 2004). Director Ichikawa employs the sound and lighting technique to characterize the solitude atmosphere in the film. The movie is a slow dreamlike story that is built by its own atmosphere rather than plot as the story unfolds. The off-kilter piano is arguably a melancholy lullaby that characterizes the mood in the film (Weis 1985). The fable-like quality of the film is evidently depicted by the washed out colors. Ichikawa has also employed dialogue to build the story of this movie. The dialogue between the protagonist and other people casted in the film serves to expose the nature of the character. It also serves to draw the audience into the events of the film (Mamer 2002). The film Tony Takitani employs the third person narration extensively. This distances the audience further from the story that unfolds. The characters in the movie spread the voiceover by occasionally addressing the audience directly. This playful touch has been employed by Ichikaw a to limit the mood from being too oppressive. It also draws the audience to the film as they lose themselves to unfolding events (Mamer 2002). The story begins by telling the real name of Toni Takitani to challenge the mystery with the reality. This has been used by Ichikawa, the film director and Murakami, the writer of the short story to capture the bathos of human condition. Murakami proceeds to describe the consequence of Tonyââ¬â¢s real name. ââ¬Å"His curly hair and sculpted characteristicsâ⬠often made people believe that he was a mixed blood child, in reality; he was pure Japanese (Murakami 2002). However, Ichikawa has captured this introduction perfectly in the film. The character posed by Ogata in the movie suits Tony perfectly from the short story. His slow movement and vacant face brings out his inner emptiness. At some instance, he is described by Eikoââ¬â¢s ex-boyfriend as dull.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Tony Takitani specifica lly for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This description is what is portrayed by Murakami in his short story, especially before he met his wife, and later after her demise. After he is left alone, the audience sees Tony huddled in the wardrobe room, probably to share what was left of his wife. The movie is based on a love story of a lonely man who becomes a professional in his field but lives in solitude. Ichikawa, the director of this film employs the third person narration technique to capture the short story authored by Murakami. Tony falls in love with a ââ¬Å"shopaholicâ⬠, a woman who had a peculiar interest in shopping. At one time when Tony takes his wife for a holiday, Murakami writes that while in Italy and France, she moved from one boutique to another like she was possessed (Murakami 2002). Ichikawa employs framing technique to emphasize the shopping problem with Tonyââ¬â¢s wife. The camera often shifts from her expensive clothes to her expensive boots to show their elegance. Ichikawa captures the theme of isolation that resonates in Murakamiââ¬â¢s short story. According to Ichikawa, the isolation in Tony Takitani is genetic in nature. The father passes his loneliness to Tony, who literary imprisons himself in his house. Ichikawa uses third person narration as a distancing tool, using a low tone voice to match the mood. He creates a simple stage and shoots most of the scenes by changing the position of the stage and the inside. Ichikawa also uses the leading actor and actress to play two roles reducing the number of people in the movie. Ichikawa uses all these techniques to capture the literal world of Murakami. In the movie, Ichikawa highlights the contemporary loneliness and how a person can allow it to take over his life. Tony assists to create his own loneliness and attempts to fill the gaps he has created. In attempt to fill the spaces he has created, he continues to deepen his solitude. Tonyââ¬â¢ s name has Americanââ¬â¢s origin after his father named him after an American army general. Tony was born during US occupation of Japan after the Second World War. Tony was given that name to help his father negotiate and earn favors from the Americans.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The narrator in the film states that being lonely is like being in a prison. Tonyââ¬â¢s father and a jazz musician lie in a Chinese prison earlier in the movie. Later his son lies with the same loneliness in his jail, his own house. This is a clear indication of what Tony was going through all his life, loneliness and solitude. Ichikawa and Murakami helped Tony to build his own prison in his house. When dating his girlfriend, he kept imagining how life would be if she decided to decline his marriage proposal. As Murakami observes, ââ¬Å"his solitude became a source of agony and a prisonâ⬠. He kept staring at the cold thick walls and contemplated committing suicide if he was rejected (Murakami 2002). Movement technique has been used to emphasize Tonyââ¬â¢s loneliness in his house. The right to left camera movement gives the audience a clear picture of his house and the solitude he was in. The film ends with Tony staring at a picture and thinking about someone else, other than himself. This is his way of showing his optimistic attitude and willingness to continue hoping. In Tonyââ¬â¢s wife wardrobe, the camera moves slowly through the rows of expensive dresses. The camera focuses briefly on each fabric to capture the sophisticated nature of the collection (Mamer 2002). Ichikawa has also combined framing and lighting to capture the events in the film. Fade to black has been used effectively appearing like turning a page. The narrator is often cut out by the characters in the film that finish his sentences. The relationship between the narrator and the characters isolates them. In addition, this is Ichikawaââ¬â¢s way of emotionally distancing the audience. The audience ends up not showing any sympathy for Tony but instead adopts his world. There are some notable differences between the film and the short story. In the film, Ichikawa adds a scene that does not appear in Murakamiââ¬â¢s short story. After Tonyââ¬â¢s wife is dead, one of her be st friends approaches Tony and agrees that Eiko was ââ¬Å"a real painâ⬠. He then declares to Tony insultingly that he was dull, just like his drawings. This demonstrates that unlike Murakamiââ¬â¢s short story, Ichikawa went further to emphasize the passive and pathetic state of the protagonist. The short story only sought to show the ordinariness of the protagonist character but the film marks the loneliness as exceptional. The short story is an account of the essential loneliness in life, while the film, though, based on the story is an account of the essential loneliness of Tonyââ¬â¢s life. Ichikawa chooses to cast Rie Miyazawa to play the roles of Tonyââ¬â¢s wife and the woman who plays the role of a secretary. Murakamiââ¬â¢s story provides all Ichikawa needs for his movie, to produce both a familiar and a different plot. Ichikawa succeeds in building the storyââ¬â¢s words with the film counterparts. In the story, the protagonistââ¬â¢s motherââ¬â¢s deat h is described in a simple way. As the author puts it, ââ¬Å"just like that, she was crematedâ⬠and then adds â⬠she faded into nothingnessâ⬠. In the movie, the protagonistââ¬â¢s mother simply smiles back at the audience and vanishes into the trees. I agree with the suggestion that ââ¬Å"the woman was born to wear beautiful clothesâ⬠. Tony got married to a woman with a strange behavior and with an insatiable need to wear new beautiful clothes. Eiko is arguably an incomplete woman who is attracted to fashions more than to anything else in the world. Wearing new expensive attires assuages her uncontrolled feelings of being incomplete. Although, Eiko turns an entire room into a wardrobe; her desire to buy more clothes does not end. To this woman, no number, design or taste was enough, she kept longing for more and more. After Tony gets concerned with this behavior, he tells her to control her desires. She agrees and even returns some of her unused collections. W hen she stops waiting for traffic light, she is taken away by the thoughts of the clothes. This is when she is slammed by a huge track and dies on the spot. This woman was indeed born to wear beautiful clothes and when she agrees to stop she meets her death. On the contrary, Tony was born to live in solitude, to lose and to make other people to be happy. In his life, both in the short story and the film, his loneliness is the most emphasized phenomenon. He has no close parent or relative, his peers discriminate him since they doubt his origin, and his college colleagues do not like his drawings. As the author writes, ââ¬Å"he found it natural to be aloneâ⬠(Murakami 2002). Although his wife spends a lot of his money on clothing, he does not object. He later puts a smile on another womanââ¬â¢s face when he attempts to hire her to replace his dead wife (Seats 2006). Later Tony sold his wifeââ¬â¢s clothes and his fatherââ¬â¢s records at a throw away price. Tonyââ¬â¢s purpose in life was to suffer and relieve the sufferings of other people. Tony loses his wife, attempts to replace her with a secretary, but then loses the secretary again. He then sells his wifeââ¬â¢s apparels and shows at a throw away price. Tony then loses his father, and later sells his records, the only memory of his father again at a throw away price. In the end, Tony loses everything apart from his loneliness, showing that he was born to lose and to be lonely (Seats 2006). Murakami uses the name Tony to signify Japanââ¬â¢s attempts to succeed in materialistic world, an ideology that contributed to defeat in war. This ideology undermined commitment of Japanese people to families, a characteristic found with Tonyââ¬â¢s father. Tonyââ¬â¢s father did not participate in the war, he instead fled to China, and this separates him from imperialism in Japan. He was imprisoned in China and as other captives were executed, he was spared from death. This has been used by the a uthor to highlight his solitude as a captive. After he is released, he moves back to Japan. Although he makes a family, he is incessantly on the move probably to counter his haunting experience in prison (Rubin 2003). Ichikawa has employed the technique of impersonality by using an omniscient voice. This voice is often interrupted by the voice of characters in the film, especially that of Tony. This is a clear indication of a disconnection existing among the characters. The visual forms applied by Ichikawa take the expressive rather than decorative form. The audience views the expressive sequence of shots of Shozaburo and Tony lying on the floor in a confined room. This is in his attempt to express the literal world in Murakamiââ¬â¢s short story. The audiences often views Tony scratching his feet depicting that he is often uncertain about himself. He scratches his feet to confirm his reality, a state that he is too lost to decipher. The profound distressing loneliness of present day Japanese culture is the main theme of Tony Takitani and which has been captured effectively in film by Ichikawa (Rubin 2003). Ichikawa considered ideological factors in the making of Tony Takitani. This film represents a passage of a particular era in history of Japan and shows growth of ideas with the passage of time. Ideological factors are closely linked to the social attitudes of people. The interaction between people in a film, their idea of social life and reasoning is represented by ideological factors in a narrative film. To understand the ideological factors that contributed in creation of Toni Takitani, we first need to understand this film as a social history. Most importantly is their ability to give a figure of the way daily life unfolded for all the characters. These include how the characters worked, how they had fun, how they formed families or how they fall apart. This will give a clear understanding of how the fabric of daily life was made or changed. This will give an understanding of the ideas applied by the people in their daily life, and hence the ideological factors (Cassegard 2007). Ideological factors can also be manifested in form of record of time in this film. Ichikawa has conserved gestures, rhythms, gaits, attitudes, and peopleââ¬â¢s interactions in different situations. In Tony Takitani, an audience can glimpse images of simple actions. For instance, we can view how Tony scratched his feet to confirm his reality. The audience can witness the way Tonyââ¬â¢s wife died and the events that lead to her death (Cassegard 2007). Tony Takitani has been used by Ichikawa as a form of historical evidence that combines technological, cultural artistic and economic situation of Japan after the Second World War. Like other forms of representational art, this film makes vivid events. In this way, the movie portrays the social attitudes of the characters in the film, including the unconscious assumptions of Japanese societies. In the fi lm, Ichikawa uses lighting to show the emotional response of characters. He uses lens flare to invoke a sense of drama in the movie (Brown 2007). This is evident just before Tonyââ¬â¢s wife is involved in an accident that ends her life. It has also been applied to give an expression of a real life scene. For instance, Rie running over a crest of a hill looks more of a real life photograph. The director has used sound as background music, sounds of objects in the story and voices of characters, all which are heard both by the audience and the characters in the film (Weis 1985). Another important aspect of sound employed by Ichikawa is the narratorââ¬â¢s commentary and mood music to create the solitude mood and the melancholy atmosphere of the film (Mamer 2002). In 1997, author David Shenk wrote the book Data Smog: Surviving The Information Glut. He theorized that the explosive growth of information made possible by the Internet was both helping society make forward-progress while simultaneously overwhelming us, the individual. He later revisited his original ideas, and posited that some still held true. In one section of the book, Shenk noted that with the use of computers, our geography of learning has become singular. That is, we read, learn, write, communicate, buy, and sell all from the same geographic place: in front of our computer. He was concerned about how well we would retain information, since our memory and retention of information is often tied to the place and situation in which it was learned. By limiting where and how we learn (in front of a computer, reading/watching a screen), we have the potential to lessen our ability to retain information. The same can be said for the geography of writing. Where we write has an impact on what we write. With that in mind, where do you find the best places to write? Is it possible that where you are writing has an effect on how and what you are writing for your blog? 1. Somewhere Warm Sure, the beach would work, unless youre like me and dont really care for a lot of sun. But lets remove the idea of a geographic location from this one, and think instead that warm isnt a place near the equator, but a temperature. According to a recent study, actual physical warmth makes us more likely to buy products because it effects us positively and makes us transfer positive feelings to the product we are buying. What might that same positive feeling do for your writing? Im from North Dakota. Im familiar with cold and how it can distract with numb fingers and shivering. When its cold, Im mainly interested in finding a way to be warm. This probably explains why I drink several cups of hot herbal tea whenever Im writing. Theres something about holding a warm cup and drinking the warm water. Dont ignore the physical nature that may be affecting your writing. A laptop thats too hot for your lap, an apartment thats too cold, a chair thats too hard, a couch thats too comfythese things affect how we write. We love excuses to stop writing. 2. Anywhere But Here The downfall of the freelancer isnt too much freedom, or the exhausting pursuit of work. It might not even be the tight budget. Its most often that innocuous Wednesday when he snaps because his entire life seems to happen within 30 feet of where he eats and sleeps. In other words, he never leaves his house. That kind of situation may be great for manifesto-writing, but not so great for blog writing, especially if youre an extrovert. Sometimes you need a different set of walls to look at, and different background noises, to jolt your writing into finding a different approach. Dont let your thoughts and input be too inbred. You might need to leave the house once in a while. The sheer need to get out and be around other people and not inside your house and inside your head makes the next location seem pretty tempting. 3. Coffee Shop Coffee Shop This is the big debate: do public locations help or distract when you are writing? J. K. Rowling claims to have written her first Harry Potter novel in her local cafà ©. But youll find that writing in a public place can be pretty loud and disruptive. There are probably just as many people who would tell you to avoid writing in a public place by any means possible. Writing in a public location has its moments, though its probably not the time to write a detailed 2,500 word blog post involving several A/B tests and datasets that you want to communicate clearly. Or, maybe it is. It depends on one thing: how do you handle distraction? I generally prefer silence when I write, and that means no music with words (classical is OK). But I can tune crowd noise out pretty well and sometimes welcome the feeling of having other humans around me even though Im not interacting with them. This is a good antidote for those bloggers and freelancers who work alone in the silence of their home too much. But, if people-watching and eavesdropping tend to win out, you might want to skip the coffee shop, the pub, or the morning commuter train. Dont overestimate your ability to not get distracted by activity around you. 4. The Library Writing at the library is just about unbeatable IMHO. (Unless your local library has become more of a noisy social place than a quite place of study.) A classic old-school library is quiet, but there are other people around so you get that Im with humans buzz. You have a wifi connection available, you have books and magazines for research and reference, and, if your library is hopping on the coffee shop trend, you have easy access to sustenance. When I was working towards my private pilots license, I spent hours and hours at the library, studying and working on my sectionals and FAA test questions. I discovered that it was a phenomenal place to work, with the sound of rustling papers and the smell of ink and books prodding you on to writing something great. Everything about the library seems to beckon you to become part of the great pantheon of writers. Dont ignore the library. It isnt just for kids and checking out books. Its a great place to do real work. And lets not forget: the library is free. You can just go there. You dont have to buy anything. 5. At Your Job If you blog as part of your job, youd probably better find a way to make blogging at your job something that works. This may mean you have a cubicle, an private office, or if youre like me, in an open room of desks with the rest of the team. This also means that I got a nice noise canceling headset because it can be challenging to write about content marketing when the developers are talking about code. Sometimes I take my laptop to one of two couches and do a bit of writing there as well. I like to mix things up and just moving from my standing desk to a couch changes my attitude. For one thing, I stop thinking my feet are tired of standing which has a tendency to make me want to hurry and get this post done. The nice thing about blogging at work is that, such distractions aside, youre working alongside the team that your blog is a part of, too. Their feedback, inputââ¬âeven just their presenceââ¬âhelps you work towards the same goal they are with your writing. 6. Where Twitter Has No Name Chrome extensions like Stay Focused seem a strange concoction, limiting the time we can spend on certain sites during the day. Why would we need an extension to keep us from visiting sites that distract us? Cant we just do that ourselves? The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. I cant tell you how many times Ive been chugging along writing and then my phone beeps and I open a new tab to see if Ive gotten another @mention on Twitter or if theres a new email and andmy thoughts are derailed. It takes a while to get back into what I was writing and recollect where I was headed. Not only is it about wasted time, but sometimes thoughts come in faint wisps that you cant grab onto and youd better write them down before they get away butââ¬âbeep! You completely forget what you were going to write. Its gone for good. Want to get your writing done? Get away from notifications on your phone and computer.Find a place to write where the Pavlovian beeps of your phone and your computer wont be a problem. Find a way to keep from stumbling into social media sites, RSS readers, and other legitimate content marketing tools you dont need to be using when it comes time to actually write. Have a research time, and collect all your research so youre not tempted to wander about the internet researching when its time to write. Considering writing with pen and paper (or typewriter, in a non-ironic way) to get the first draft done to keep yourself from the distraction of the internet.à Ive started writing with pen and paper for some writing projects just because I stay focused better. My writing output has jumped as Ive moved to starting things out on paper. Dont write where there is a TV handy, unless youre certain you wont turn it on. These are just a few tactics I use to make sure I get my writing done. We each have different distractions, and therefore, different solutions on avoiding those distractions. Hail is also used as an interjection to acclaim (ââ¬Å"Hail to the chief!â⬠) or salute (ââ¬Å"Hail, fellow well met!â⬠) someone, though itââ¬â¢s an archaic usage rarely applied anymore. This meaning stems from the Old Norse word heill, used for the same purpose but derived from that wordââ¬â¢s original meaning, ââ¬Å"healthy.â⬠The homophone hale, rarely used outside of the expression ââ¬Å"hale and hearty,â⬠carries a connotation of good health persisting into old age. (The archaic salutation wassail, with a second syllable sharing the same etymology, stems from an Old Norse exhortation to be well; modern usage refers to a hot alcoholic drink served from a bowl at a Christmas celebration, or to revelry in general.) The verb hail means not only ââ¬Å"acclaimâ⬠but also ââ¬Å"greetâ⬠or ââ¬Å"summon.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s rarely used in the sense of greeting, but the expression ââ¬Å"hail a taxiâ⬠(or ââ¬Å"cabâ⬠), referring to summoning a vehicle for hire, is common. (The rare verb hale, meaning ââ¬Å"dragâ⬠or ââ¬Å"pullâ⬠in the sense of drawing a horseââ¬â¢s reins or a weapon, or to haul a net or an anchor, is cognate with haul and is distantly related to hail in the sense of ââ¬Å"call.â⬠) Meanwhile, the Catholic devotional salutation ââ¬Å"Hail, Maryâ⬠inspired the colorful expression ââ¬Å"Hail Mary passâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Hail Mary playâ⬠to describe a desperate gambit in football. One who hails is a hailer, though this term is all but unknown except in the British English term loud-hailer, the name of a device also known as a megaphone or a bullhorn. In maritime usage, sailors are said to hail one another as their vessels pass each other, identifying themselves and passing news; in earlier times, they would be said to speak each other. Also, to stay within hail or within hailing distance is to remain close enough to be heard. A related usage from the nautical sense is to say that someone hails from somewhere, meaning that the person is a native or a resident of a place. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Analyze the history and development of that doctr - Research Paper Example Basically Christian understanding concerning the Trinity starts from the two elements, namely His essense and His acts, which are the way of functioning of the three Persons in the Trinity. Human beings thus far haven't been able to have a frame of reference in order to explain the Mystery of Trinity and can never do that also. But only thing we can know is Logic cannot transcend divinity. If man's knowledge is like a drop of water, then the knowledge of God would be like an ocean which transcends all limits. Thus we don't have the eligibility, neither have we the capability to comprehend His mystery. His true entity no one can ever understand. Gregory of Nazianzen expresses God as, ââ¬Å"One God, One in diversity, diverse in Unity, wherein is a marvelâ⬠(Second Theological Oration par. 1). We believe in His essence because we experience his energies. Rational bases even if are good, not always vital for stability of our faith. Still we have Scriptural resources, and historic t heological literatures which definitely help us to grasp enough about the mystery of the Triune God. Only whatever is necessary for our finite understanding is revealed by God. In this paper, the writer would try to analyse how important the doctrine of Trinity is for the Christians, further looking through the historical development of the doctrine and the firmness of the doctrine in the minds of the Christians. IMPORTANCE OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY: As we said at the outset, Christian faith balances upon the reality of God, His Triune existence. The doctrine elaborates the reality of God and explains the mysteries. It reveals God's personality. It says that God is not simply a supernatural entity but He is a person with a personality. It brings into light the function of the Godhead in three streams- The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, explaining their acts in history of humanity and the sole focus to redeem humanity from the clutches of sin and death. The Father, the fi rst Person in the Godhead is the sender of the Son who came down to earth, sacrificing all the glory of the Heaven, to offer Himself as a vicarious sacrifice for the sins of the entire humanity. The Father reveals the grandeur of His love for humanity through His Son. The Son is the second Person in the Godhead Who alone was qualified to do the task. He finished His work of bringing redemption for man by defeating death and overpowering the effect of sin. Moreover He became an ideal for being obedient, which was the very mistake of Man that brought sin into the world. Holy Spirit is the third Person in the Godhead Who is the transformer of human heart by the planting of Christ into his/her life through penitence, making him/her return from sin. He guides a person in the spiritual journey in this life making the person more like Christ every day. Without the Holy Spirit, the redemption offered by Christ cannot be experienced fully. ââ¬Å"Redemption, therefore, in historic Christiani ty is initiated by the Father (Galatians 4:4), accomplished through the Son (1 Peter 3:18), and is applied by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5)â⬠(Samples par.3). Thus the whole process of redemption which is the core of God's mission in this world is not feasible without the Trinity i.e. Father, Son and the Holy Spirit all together. Trinitarian concept of God also solves another problem. According to St. Augustine, only the God Who is united in His plural nature can be loving. Unless God is plural in Himself and is solitary, then the Luis Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04092636641010354997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8673849588591083147.post-89311849502677391172020-02-02T11:57:00.001-08:002020-02-02T11:57:02.546-08:00Cartier Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 wordsCartier - Essay Example The stimuli related to the brand that evokes various behavioural responses of the consumers are due to various features of the brand which are namely, the communications of the brand, the packaging of the products offered under the brand names and the market environment created by the brand strategies of the company (Aaker, 1996, p.47). Brand experience is of high importance to the companies in todayââ¬â¢s market as the brand experience enjoyed by the customers creates an attachment towards preferred brands and hence, develops brand loyalty. In order to sustain business growth in the competitive markets, the companies put additional focus in including brand experience in their market strategies. By acquiring a loyal set of customer through brand experience, the companies have been able to acquire and maintain substantial market share in the industry. This piece of work includes a review of the literature on brand experience and the marketing strategies adopted by the companies in order to develop their brand experience (Aaker, 1997, p.352). The aspect of brand experience has been discussed in context to Cartier luxury brand. Literature Review The age of globalization has opened up the markets in several economies and the companies have expanded in the global markets in order to tap the potential market demand. The increase in market competition has increased the bargaining power of the customers. Over the years, the companies have observed changing trends in the customer behaviour in accepting brands from the available market options. Thus understanding the customer behaviour is important from the point of view of the companies in order to sustain their market shares. Brand experience has emerged as an important consideration for addressing the behaviour of the customers and their responses to various brands that they use in todayââ¬â¢s competitive market. The behaviour of the customers related to brand experience depends on not one but several features o f the brand like brand personality, brand community, brand attachment, brand trust and brand love (Ariely, 1998, p.36). The brand experience could be conceptualised as the generation of feelings, sensations, emotion of the customers in response to the brand related stimuli. The concept of brand experience emerges with the classification of customerââ¬â¢s experience into sensory, affective, intellectual, behavioural features of the customerââ¬â¢s behaviour (Schmitt, Zarantonello and Brakus, 2009, p.65). The feelings generated in the customer due to the sensory stimulus refer to the customerââ¬â¢s response to the aesthetic features of the product. The sensory emotions within the customer are generated by the focus on beautifying the product through better packaging. The better packaging in comparison to others provides as sense of assurance and belief to the consumer. The affective component of brand experience generates different customer behaviour as a result of the underly ing belief and ideas of the customer on the particular brand. The affective behaviour of the customer is based on the direct and indirect interaction that the customer had in relation to the bran Luis Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04092636641010354997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8673849588591083147.post-38513517689946291352020-01-25T08:20:00.001-08:002020-01-25T08:20:02.944-08:00Euthanasia and Living Wills :: Free Euthanasia Essay Euthanasia and Living Wills Imagine someone you love...better yet, imagine yourself lying in a hospital bed oblivious to the world around you, unable to move or show any signs of life, your own existence controlled by an I.V., a respiratory machine, and a feeding tube. In essence you are dead. Your body is no longer able to sustain life, its entire purpose is now replaced by a machine - you are being kept alive by artificial means. At this point the question arises - should you be kept alive by these means or should you be allowed to die a natural death? Unfortunately you are unable to answer this question because your voice is limited to a "beep" on a heart monitor machine. Who then is going to decide if you live artificially or die naturally? Who gets to play God? Well, if your family doesn't have your written consent in the form of a living will, to cease life support, then the doctor will make the ultimate decision for both you and your family. Most often this is the case. Even though writing a living will is just as easy if not easier than writing a death will, many people don't take the time to do so. Therefore, doctors have to debate the question of euthanasia - a question that each one of us should ponder long before we are put in this situation. What is euthanasia? Euthanasia is not mercy killing. It has absolutely nothing to do with killing. On the contrary, euthanasia by definition simply means "good death" and in the applied sense it refers to "the patients own natural death without prolonging their dying process unduly." What this attempts to accomplish is to allow a person to die with peace and dignity. In most cases life-support systems simply prolong the terminal suffering of a patient by a few more weeks or months, they do nothing to return a patient to a normal functioning human being. With most terminally ill patients life support does not mean prolonging life - it means prolonging suffering, for both the patient and their family. Although there are no statutes legalizing euthanasia in the U.S. many doctors end a terminal patients life by administering a fatal dose of a drug that they were previously administering. But also has many ethical issues among the morals that are in todayââ¬â¢s society. Three ethical issues in the film are capital punishment, drug use, and media treatment. Capital punishment is an ethical issue because it is highly opinionated. Some people believe that people shouldnââ¬â¢t have to die to pay for their crime, while others believe that death is the best way to pay for what theyââ¬â¢ve done as a consequence. This makes an argument that if someone has killed another human, should they be killed too? It makes it hard in different countries as their laws may be different and death penalties can really occur and happen. Drug use is also an ethical issue because they believe they arenââ¬â¢t harming anyone and a majority of the drug users want illicit drugs to be legalised. A lot of todayââ¬â¢s society argues that the drug users affect more than just themselves such us driving under the influence of drugs, can lead to other innocent people into serious injuries or death in a crash. Media treatment is another ethical issue in the film; this is because M.J Major wanted the story to get out so bad it was more important than Lewisââ¬â¢s life. This is an ethical issue because the media have the rights to tell the story to the public but in a bit to try save Lewisââ¬â¢s life instead of just telling the story. In the start of the film, Sheriff was completely an individual and his worldview was all about himself and what he wanted to do; what is best for him. Sheriff was also a pleasure seeker and really only cared for the wellbeing of himself. For example, when Tony, Sheriff and Lewis were riding a bike they borrowed and crashed it, Lewis wanted it to return it to the owner but sheriff didnââ¬â¢t want to get into trouble and threw the bike away. Also Sheriff left all the hash they had in a bin outside of the house where Lewis stayed and the cops found out about that and bike. When Sheriff found out that Lewis was in prison, he definitely didnââ¬â¢t want to go back, he thought about spending 3-6 years in prison for someone else and didnââ¬â¢t want it. Sheriff then fell in love with Beth. After he found out that Beth was Lewisââ¬â¢s sister, he realised what he wanted and knew his mistakes, with this his worldview changed. In court he confessed to all the crimes that had been put on Lewis, taking responsibility for his actions really was a change of person. Sheriff hadà developed a humanistic world view and also a Christian view on life. He believed at the end that every life was worth just as much as his own, and that everyone deserves to live and have the same rights. Throughout the film in the plot and themes, the film promotes and encourages Christian values and ethics. The film shows and promotes these values and ethics through the character of Sheriff. At the start of the movie, Sheriff was a selfish and individual person, but towards the end of the movie he became a loving and caring person, thinking of others and not about himself. It is a noticeable change when he just starts thinking of others. To show the Christian values, they promote them through Sheriff about helping and thinking of others, compassion and that everyoneââ¬â¢s life is worth as much as your own. This is also shown when Sheriff stops thinking of the wellbeing of himself and really tries to help Lewis. Sheriff was willing to give up a bit of his life to save Lewisââ¬â¢s life. Sheriff shows human value by going back to Malaysia and not leaving with Tony, he also fell in love and Beth became a big part in showing him the right way. Just before Lewis died Sheriff was showing great compassion to Lewis making sure he knew he wasnââ¬â¢t alone and everyone was there for him. Japanese is no exception, but the rules and traditions mean there is not a lot of consistency in which direction the written word appears. There are three Japanese scripts: KanjiHiraganaKatakana Japanese is commonly written with a combination of all three.à Kanji are what are known as ideographic symbols, and hiragana and katakana are phonetic alphabets which make up the syllables of Japanese words. Kanji has several thousand characters, but hiragana and katakana only have 46 characters each. The rules on when to use which alphabet varies greatly and kanji words usually have more than one pronunciation, to add to the confusion.à Traditionally,à Japanese was only written vertically. Mostà historical documents are written in this style. However, with the introduction of western materials, the alphabet, Arabic numbers, and mathematical formulas, it became less convenient to write things vertically. Science-related texts, which include many foreign words, gradually had to be changed to horizontal text.à Today most school textbooks, except those about Japanese or classical literature, are written horizontally. Most often its the young people who write this way. Though, some older people still prefer to write vertically citing that it looks more formal. Most general books are set in vertical text since most Japanese readers can comprehend the written language either way. But horizontal written Japaneseà is the more common style in the modernà era.à Common Horizontal Japanese Writing Uses In some circumstances, it makes more sense to write Japanese characters horizontally. Particularly, thats the case when there are terms and phrases taken from foreign languages which cant be written vertically. For instance, most scientific and mathematical writing is done horizontally in Japan. It makes sense if you think about it; you cant change the ordering of an equation or a math problem from horizontal to vertical and have it retain the same meaning or interpretation.à Likewise, computer languages, especially those that originated in English, retain their horizontal alignment in Japanese texts.à Uses for Vertical Japanese Writing Vertical writing is still frequently used in Japanese, especially in popular culture printing like newspapers and novels. In some Japanese newspapers, such as the Asahi Shimbun, both vertical and horizontal text is used, with horizontal lettering more frequently used in the body copy of articles and vertical used in headlines.à For the most part musical notation in Japan is written horizontally, in keeping with the Western style. But for music played on traditional Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) or the kugo (harp), the musical notation is usually written vertically.à Addresses on mailing envelopes and business cards are usually written vertically (although some business cards may have a horizontal English translationà The general rule of thumb is the more traditional and formal the writing, the more likely it will appear vertically in Japanese. Along with the use of mass merchandising as a form of marketing films, with the hope of creating awareness among the public. Prepare a report in which you analyze the marketing channel conflicts and cannibalization issues that Lonely Planet faces as it is currently operating. Suggest solutions that might reduce revenue losses or operational frictions that result from these issues. We will write a custom essay sample on Case Study Lonely or any similar topic only for you Order Now Channel Conflict: when sales through the companyââ¬â¢s web site interfere with sales in that companyââ¬â¢s retail stores. The potential for significant channel conflict exists in Lonely Planet with the same product (books or content) being sold via multiple channel. Lonely Planet has worked hard to minimize channel conflict by selling books on their website only at the recommended retail price, therefore it does not undercutting their retail resellers. Moreover, most retailers hold only a small selection of the five hundred Lonely Planet titles, and for the many titles they do not hold, channel conflict is minimal. The CitySync product is also carefully positioned to reduce channel conflict, since it targets a specific segment (time-poor, cash-rich travelers) with a new offering that is somewhat different from the existing Lonely Planet city guidebooks. However, over time there may be some conflict between CitySync and products such as customized guidebooks. Cannibalization: The loss of traditional sales of a product to its electronic counterpart. The well-known travel guides company, Lonely Planet gives a lot of guides for free on its website. A few years ago, many major travel-guide publishers were concerned that Lonely Planet website will hurt their sales. If travelers have to travel on board, they could just go on the website in order to read all the information they need without buying the Lonely Planet travel guide paper version. But far from cannibalizing sales instead, the net has helped publishers build their brands and expand into new territory. Moreover, giving information on its own website is a way to do free advertising. Without this display of guides on the website, customer would not have bought the travel guide paper version. Lonely Planet and other leading publishers have recorded growth rates of 15% to 25% per year over the past four years, as much as their guidebook content has migrated online. 2. Prepare a list of a new products that Lonely Planet might introduce to take advantage of Internet technologies (including wireless technologies for mobile devices) and address customerââ¬â¢s concerns about the timeliness and currency of information in the printed travel guides. Briefly describe any problems that Lonely Planet will face as it introduces these new products. In 2008, Lonely Planet launched Pick Mix which enables travelers to go to a section of the Lonely Planet Website ( http://shop.lonelyplanet.com), select the country or region to which they are travelling and download the chapter for the place they are visiting. Rather than carry loose pages, chapters (served as PDF files) can be downloaded into a hand-held device or e-book reader. Interactive e-book travel guides: Emerging the best of both medium ââ¬â digital and print ââ¬â into one interactive ebook guide. Lonely Planet introduced e-books on ipad, so the layout and design is to flip through a guidebook and includes signature stunning images, expert author content and tips from local. Unlike traditional print guide book, the digital format allows to include over 3,000 hyperlinks so readers can get to a particular chapter or map with just a tap of a finger. Thus, travelers can get information on a particular region, point of interest or hotel/ restaurant without flipping through the pages. More, travelers can search terms in Google or Wikipedia for additional content. Travelers can also bookmark the places they donââ¬â¢t want to miss and make notes on the page, just like a print guidebook. Usually traditional publishing cycle for the print guides is every 2 years, but with e-books, it will be updated in a real time. However, unlike apps, ebook updates are not pushed out to end user, and readers will have the opportunity to repurchase the new edition. In addition, due to handheldââ¬â¢s limited memory and bandwidth, the new applications focus on cities, not countries. They obviously can not replace a guidebook for a month-long odyssey in Thailand or an exploration of Italyââ¬â¢s Amalfi Coast. à But for the traveler who wants to figure out how to spend a free afternoon or where to go for dinner, these mobile guides ââ¬â plus a good map are ideal substitutes for printed guides. Lonely Planet therefore should continue to invest in product development to work with the likes of Apple, Google, Amazone, Nokia, etc. 3. Many loyal Lonely Planet customers carry their travel guides (which can be several hundred pages thick) with them as they travel around the world. In many cases, these customers do not use large portions of the travel guides. Also, Internet access can be a problem for many of these customers while they are travelling. Describe a product (or products) that might address this customer concern and also yield additional revenue for Lonely Planet. Your answer here could build on ideas that you developed in your solution to part2. By using interactive ebook travel guides, travelers doing longer trips do not need to carry three or four guidebooks during travelling. Travelers can buy the content directly and save it in their hand-held or ebook before they are going to travel on board if the current destination does not provide good internet connection. It is also an ease to carry around. Moreover, travelers can bookmark the places they donââ¬â¢t want to miss and make notes on the page, just like a print guidebook. They certainly play an important role in any individual life and help to explain how each person develops a frame of reference. Subcultures are simply a world within the larger world of a dominant culture. They are any corner in life in which peoples experiences lead them to have their own unique perceptions on the world. Everybody has their own perceptions on society, values, and life in general. Values, attitudes, gestures, and sanctions tend to stem from the dominant culture in ones life.Throughout the dominant culture that a person spends his or her time in learning and changing through different experiences many subcultures have developed. People have a variety of interests, careers, hobbies, values, and identities. Subcultures allow people who share similar interests to assimilate, socialize, gives them a sense of belonging and fellowship among peers. Countercultures have their own unique role in society. Counterculture can also be described as a group whose behavior deviates from the societal norm. Countercultures can be both negative and positive. They can also become larger when more people are involved and assimilate into the mainstream just as subcultures in general have this potential. Biker Gangs, drug users, career criminals, prisoners, and terrorists have in cornrow that they all have negative perceptions from society and are countercultures. The March on Wall Street group of people can be considered counterculture and can be viewed as both positive and negative.Members of the underground Railroad who fought for freedom during times of slavery can be a counterculture viewed as positive today but at the time had a negative view by most of society. Today, society believes everybody is equal and has the same rights in America which is the mainstream culture. The colonists during the American Revolution were a counterculture to Great Britain. Personally, I was involved in the March on Orlando counterculture and have no problem admitting it.Conspiracy theorists are a part of countercultures as well and are viewed by mainstream society or culture in a negative connotation and therefore usually would not discuss this type of thing unless they were with other conspiracy theorists. Doctors, factory workers, electricians, basketball players, college students, etc are all subcultures. I am a part of the college student subculture, musician subculture, modern art, theatre, Greek, and French subculture. Depending on which society or culture referred to depends on the positive or negative perception on these things. My family is fairly conservative and I am fairly liberal, so we are in different political subcultures. I am a huge sports fan, so that would put me in that subculture. Within that subculture, my favorite football team is the Chicago Bears because am originally from the Chicago area. Florida culture is different than the culture of Montana. Central FL culture is different than the culture in the FL Keys. Am apart of the Central Florida subculture. I work for a tree company and have attended 12 step fellowships and motivational speakers which have their own subcultures.Ive traveled to many places and embrace cultural relativism. Certainly do not believe my way of looking at things is the only way of looking at things. Dont hold my own culture as a standard of judging ways of others. I am interested in Indian culture, Japanese culture, and European specifically French culture. I am looking to dive into the musician subculture further to find more subcultures. I am always looking to meet new people and share views and interests and am open-minded to becoming a part of new subcultures as well. The United States society has 1 asss of subcultures. I found learning about the how and why subcultures play a huge role in society to be quite invigorating. Im sure that there are subcultures and countercultures that am apart of and am unaware of it completely. Its virtually impossible for me to know everything there is on subcultures because there are so many of them. All in all I feel that people just want to be with people who share similar views on the world and thus subcultures and countercultures were formed and are huge in understanding how society works. Then some idiot had to go and make a movie out of it. In contrasting the two, I found alot more differences than similarities. The first similarity came when Blue Elk came and took Thomas Black Bull to the reservation. Tom had trouble with the kids as in the book. Brother Bear was chained up and eventually Tom took him back to the woods and left him just as Tom did in part I of the book. Of course, Red Dillion was a jerk in both the movie and the book, although the book illustrated a better image in the readers mind. There were quite a few things the two had in common but the differences outnumber the similarities. I am not going to attempt to represent every difference but I wil give a few examples. For instance, we first see Tom, or any characters for that matter, after George and his mom dies. The movie represents Tom as older, during his rodeo days. In the book, during Red and Toms 2 fight, he only knocks him down but in the movie he beats him up really bad. He goes home with the nurse but in the book he does nothing of that sort. So far he hasnt gone for the bear yet but were not finished yet. The book had alot going for it and I thought that it was much better than the movie. The movie was a horrible experience and is probably the only time I wished my teacher wouldnt have shown it. Usually, I like the movie better than the book but this was the exception. Whoever made this movie should be charged with murder (of the book). The movie missed alot of the key points. The movie was interesting and did illustrate some things better than the book. It did an excellent job of show Toms transitiion from rags to riches. In addition, the movie moved alittle faster which made it more exciting. I believe that it did a better job when Tom actually ditched Red and got into the big tournament. Both had their strong points. The book was better...way better. This is a good example of why a movie shouldnt be made from a book or at least a person may want to consider skipping the movie if they really liked the book. Although, the movie was better in some areas overall I would definitely recommend the book over the movie. In conclusion, movie = F book = A. Wade, which legalizes abortion. For the proponents of abortion rights, the BIAPA has reduced the legal bounds of abortion. For them and some medical practitioners, there are certain ââ¬Å"situations involving human life (that) sometimes involve complex ethical challenges.â⬠(Religious Tolerance) It is in this respect that the pro-choice camp as well as the advocates of reproductive health rights has raised anew calls for the repeal of the BIAPA. For many years, after the U.S. Supreme Court made a final and executory decision on Roe v. Wade, abortion has been considered legal in the country. The decision is not to be taken as a mere rule that declares abortion as legal. It must be understood in the context that it grants recognition for the rights of women to determine what is best for their reproductive health. It has enshrined such rights alongside the basic freedoms stated in the Constitution. The decision also strengthened the growing international movement for the womenââ¬â¢s right to determine their own lives, free from the gender-biased secular and religious regulations. In this regard, Roe vs. Wade is one progressive legal step that makes the U.S. more advanced in terms of providing liberty and respecting the rights of its citizens, especially women, an example that the rest of the modern world can learn from and emulate. However, the BIAPA is not only an obstacle to the advancement of the rights on reproductive h ealth and self-determination. It is actually step backwards to the era prior to Roe v. Wade. While the BIAPA was still a house bill called H.R. 4292, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) vehemently opposed it. According to them the bill attacks the very essence of Roe v. Wade. The definition of legal personhood as pointed out in the H.R. 4292, extends to premature infants who Luis Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04092636641010354997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8673849588591083147.post-52758368416864737482019-11-20T20:22:00.001-08:002019-11-20T20:22:03.051-08:00Inside Obama's Presidency Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1Inside Obama's Presidency - Essay Example The second challenge was the huge bonuses awarded as compensation to the banks; .the public was angry. When Obama met with the top banks C.E.Oââ¬â¢s, most people expected that he would take on a hard approach against them, but this was not the case to the dismay of many. The banks seemed to have gotten it all on silver Plata. Another challenge was the reforms on the health care. Again he tried to take a bipartisan approach, but there came the problem; dealing with the congress that often slows down processes. The republicans were on his case: they did not vote for the motion. When faced with the issue of terrorism and handling Osama Bin Laden, he had to make the verdict to send U.S troops to Iraq. Leon Panetta, the CIA director, had information that Osama lived in a compound in Pakistan. The American troops went for the raid, and that reported that Osama had been killed. Another obstacle came which Obama had not foreseen. During the mid-term elections, his party lost to the republicans. Most of his supporters had been ousted, and he now had to take another approach to get things done. To take care of the debt crisis, he met John Boehner, who let him down when he needed him the most. To Obama it seemed that he had total confidence in his governance. He was so sure that his bipartisan approach would work. But if we would gauge his performance on this, Iââ¬â¢d say that he was not successful. In all instances, he had to look for a second option. For example, looking at the stimulus bill, it passed without the votes from the republicans. Clearly, his promise to offer bipartisan solutions did not see the light of day. This was not because he was not willing to do so, but because the republicans were not ready to cooperate. From the first termââ¬â¢s performance, Obama tried too much to change how things worked: he had too many expectations that there wouldnââ¬â¢t be politics. He ought to have taken it as it is. B) As employment increases there are more wage earners. An increase in the amount of people with money to buy goods and services increases aggregate demand and pushes up prices. The US is currently in recovery as the GDP is and has been positive while the economy is beginning to create jobs in sufficient quantity to begin decreasing the unemployment rate. C) 2) A) [(108,000-100,000)/100,000]*(160/168)=7.62% per year B) The CPI is more appropriate in this case because it is calculated using changes in the prices of products used by consumers. The GDP Deflator is calculated using the inflation rate for the entire economy. The CPI will therefore give a more accurate comparison of Jeanââ¬â¢s purchasing power as a consumer. 3)A) The starting nominal return on the bonds can be calculated by adding the nominal market inflation expectation and the real yield req uired. The starting nominal rate is therefore 3%. If inflation expectations increase to 3.5% it causes bond demand to decrease and bond supply to increase. This lowers the price of bonds and therefore pushes interest rates up. The nominal rate would then be 4.5%. An increase in the expected real rate of return to 1.5% would lower demand for bonds and shift the demand curve. This shift increases interest rates to a nominal return of 5%. B) 4) A) Year Real GDP Growth rate of RGDP in % Unemployment Rate % Change in U rate in % CPI Indices Inflation rate in % 2004 12,263.8 - 5.5 - 188.9 - 2005 12,638.4 3.05% 5.1 -7.27% 195.3 3.39% 2006 12,976.2 2.67% 4.6 -9.80% 201.6 3.23% 2007 13,228.9 1.95% 4.6 0.00% 207.342 2.85% 2008 13,228.8 0.00% 5.8 26.09% 215.303 3.84% 2009 12,880.6 -2.63% 9.3 60.34% 214.537 -0.36% b) Historically as RGDP has been above 2% there has been growth in employment. When RGDP growth fell below 2% unemployment began to rise. As unemployment rose inflation decreased even reaching a short period of deflation. The leading indicator is RGDP followed by unemployment finally followed by the CPI. There has been growth in RGDP. This growth has lead to moderate decreases in the unemployment rate. The lagging nature of the CPI is confirmed by current data growing as RGDP and employment both increase. If RGDP continues to grow then the unemployment rate will continue to decrease and the CPI will continue to increase. If for some reason RGDP growth should slow or turn negative then unemployment will increase and CPI will decrease. 5) P1=$145 P2=$40 P3=$90 The higher the price of oil the more expensive inputs that require any type of energy become. Thus the higher the price of oil the less firms can supply at any given price level. This effect aggregates into the overall economy decreasing output while increasing price level. The decrease in the price of oil caused output to increase and the price level to fall. As oil prices increase again they will act as a headwind to the economic recovery, pushing output lower and price up for oil dependant resources. A decline in the price of oil may not have a positive effect upon equity markets because it will not have an effect upon the amount of products that consumers are demanding. Although inputs may fall, the demand curve is not shifted. 6) Infrastructure projects would have more simulative effect than tax rebates because of a larger Luis Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04092636641010354997noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8673849588591083147.post-6209588076646317082019-11-16T11:36:00.001-08:002019-11-16T11:36:06.497-08:00Requirements Of Managers In Contemporary Business Practices Management EssayRequirements Of Managers In Contemporary Business Practices Management Essay Topic: Imagine there is a proposed merger between a Chinese company and a South-African company. You are appointed to lead a team consisting of managers from both countries to examine any cultural problems linked to the proposed merger. Applying the work of Hofstede and Trompenaars, how close would the cultural fit be; and how might you seek to improve cultural understanding between the two groups of managers? Introduction In todays business environment, possessing management skills alone is no longer sufficient to be successful. Contemporary business practices require that managers have knowledge and experience regarding the differences between management and leading as well, and how both activities must be integrated for business success. With the importance of International Business environment is raising, understanding the host countrys culture can give managers a competitive advantage. The objective of this assignment is to examine any cultural problems linked to the proposed merger between Chinese Company and a South-African Company, by using Hofstedes dimensions of National culture, and then explore solutions which can improve cultural understanding between the two groups of managers. This assignment mainly has two parts; the first part will give out the cultural problems from two companys side; and the second part is going to find the solutions for the issues. Part One-Cultural Problems China -South Africa team-work As we may realize that the globalization of the world economy, on one hand, has created tremendous opportunities for global collaboration among different countries; on the other hand, however, it has also created a unique set of problems and issues relating to the effective management of partnerships with different cultures. With the increasing importance of the China market in the world economy, many businessmen rushed to enter China to explore business opportunities. Predominantly motivated by the quest for material inputs (oil and other primary commodities) required for its infrastructural investments and booming manufacturing sector, Chinese presence in Africa is rapidly growing (Song Li, 2004). The rapid growth and significance of enhanced Chinese participation in Africa has important implications while talking about cultural aspects. Hofstedes Cultural Dimensions on China and South Africa By applying Geert Hofstedes Cultural Dimensions, the culture difference between China and South-Africa has been displayed in the below charts. Five factors have been discussed on Hofstedes Cultural Dimensions (Hofstede, 1997) Power Distance Index (PDI) that is the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions (like the family) accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. Individualism (IDV), on the one side versus its opposite, collectivism, that is the degree to which individuals are inte-grated into groups. Masculinity (MAS), versus its opposite, femininity, refers to the distribution of roles between the genders which is another fundamental issue for any society to which a range of solutions are found. Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) which deals with a societys tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity; it ultimately refers to mans search for Truth. Long-Term Orientation (LTO) which versus short-term orientation. According to Hofstedes Value Dimensions on China (See below chart), it can be concluded that China has a comparatively high long-term orientation. This has a historical relationship with its economy. Commonly, most of Asian countries are belonging to the less developed / developing countries. Suffering bad times taught many Chinese people to think and act on a long-term basis. Prior to Chinas economic reform, the government ruled all strategies, supplies, and financial allocations. Leaders, under the contemporary definition, did not exist, because all organizations had to do was to make sure that the allocated quotas were fulfilled, and that the people assigned to them were cared for. The notion of leaders was fulfilled entirely by Confucian values, aligning allegiance to CEOs with allegiance to the government. However, in 1978, managers of state-owned companies were now responsible for corporate operations and profit-making. Example 1- China Source: Cultural Dimensions on China, 2009 Now looking at the figures of South Africa cultural dimensions, it is easy to find that the South Africa has a comparable high IDV and MAS, and its PDI and UAI are a little bit low. It means that people are tending to work individually and certain of social hierarchy exist which has much relation with its history. Example 2- South Africa Source: Cultural Dimensions on South Africa, 2009 Analysis on different cultural dimensions To clarify the differences between China and Africa, the student will focus on Hofstedes five cultural dimensions: power distance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/femininity, and uncertainty avoidance and long-term/short-term orientation also called Confucian Dynamism(Hofstede, 1997). China and Africa differ greatly with regard to their economic systems, political systems, social values, and laws, despite the substantial changes that have occurred in China during recent years(McCoy, 2005). Some differences can be found according to Hofstede studies on culture differences. Power Distance China is centralized (though it has shown some tendency toward decentralized power) while Africa is relatively decentralized. In high power distance cultures, authority is inherent in ones position within a hierarchy. There are strong dependency relationships between parents and children, bosses and subordinates and a significant social distance between superior and subordinate. In low power distance or power tolerance cultures, individuals assess authority in view of its perceived rightness. Individualism The student notices in both cases that contrary to western countries which have a strong individualism, China and Africa have a strong collectivism. Individualism-collectivism refers to the relative importance of the interests of the individual versus the interests of the group. In collectivistic societies, the interests of the group take precedence over individual interests. People see themselves as part of in-groups and the in-groups look after them in exchange for their loyalty. In individualistic cultures, the interest of the individual takes precedence over the groups interest. Masculinity Africa has higher value than China in masculinity, which indicates that Africa is medium masculinity while China is medium femininity. Masculinity-femininity or goal orientation pertains to the extent to which traditional male orientations of ambition and achievement are emphasized over traditional female orientations of nurturance and interpersonal harmony (Song Li, 2004). Cultures differ on what motivates people to achieve different goals. Cultures of the aggressive goal behaviour type (masculinity) value material possessions, money, and assertiveness whereas cultures of the passive goal behaviour type (femininity) value social relevance, quality of life and welfare of others. Uncertainty Avoidance China and Africa have higher values for uncertainty avoidance the West. This shows that in both sides, people are relatively risk-avoiding while western people are relatively risk-taking. Uncertainty avoidance captures the degree to which individuals in a culture feel threatened by ambiguous, uncertain, or new situations. Cultures are characterized as either high or low on uncertainty avoidance. Whereas low uncertainty avoidance cultures prefer positive response to change and new opportunities, high uncertainty avoidance cultures prefer structure and consistent routine. Long/Short-term Orientation Africa has a short-term orientation while China has a long-term orientation. Also called Confucian dynamism, this last dimension assesses a societys capacity for patience and delayed gratification. Long-term oriented cultures (China and Hong Kong) tend to save more money and exhibit more patience in reaping the results of their actions. Short-term oriented cultures (African countries) want to maximize the present rewards and are relatively less prone to saving or anticipating long term rewards. It has been widely accepted that cultural differences greatly affect human thinking and behaviour and thus business organizations in which people interact on the basis of shared values. Management is embedded in a wider societal setting, and is heavily influenced by local historical and cultural norms (DiMaggio and Powell, 2003). The significant differences between Africa and China seem to affect some aspects of their business management practice. Part two-Solutions Cultural Differences in business Strategies Because entrepreneurs mature within a societal context, their attitudes toward cooperation are likely to be influenced by the underlying values of their society (Weaver, 2000). As discussed above, Africa and China have a strong collectivism. People depend more on groups or institutions to determine what they should do and emphasize loyalty to the group. They are more likely to cooperate with others to avoid risks and reduce responsibilities. However due to the medium masculinity, Africans sometimes are reluctant to cooperate because their masculine culture view cooperation in general as a sign of weakness and place a high value on independence and control. In the process of cooperation, Chinese tend to pay more attention to relationships. The student has to mention the term Guanxi which in English means relation or connection is at the centre of businesses in China. In Weavers studies (2000), the student found that entrepreneurs from societies that are masculine and individualistic h ave a lower appreciation for cooperative strategies as compared to entrepreneurs from societies that are feminine and collectivist in nature. Cultural Differences in Conflict Management In order to solve conflicts, Chinese and Africans have different ways. For Chinese where harmony and personal relationship are very important, they dont like open conflict; therefore they use indirect ways to work out problems. Anytime there is conflict, they use the authority to end up with it or settle things in private. Negotiation and compromise are determinant for them in this case. Contrary to them, Africans managers like Europeans or Americans, will directly confront problems and bring them out in the open (Richmond and Gestrin, 2008). To resolve problems, everybody is involved in order to bring rational arguments and ideas to suggest solutions. We can notice that Chinese avoid this method because for them that will create disagreement which is very undesirable. African managers are reluctant to devote their time and efforts together in solving business conflicts. Other peoples help is needed. In contrast, according to Bond (2001), the strong collective orientation and uncerta inty avoidance values in China encourage Chinese managers to use indirect forms of influence that involve the assistance of a third party. Indirect forms are used by Chinese managers to deal with a difficult or controversial request. In this way, they avoid losing face or damaging guanxi. Cultural Differences in Decision-making Risk-taking/Risk-avoiding Chinese and African managers differ from in the attitudes toward risks when they make decisions for their different values in uncertainty avoidance. Chinese managers with a high uncertainty-avoidance have a lack adventurous spirit and the sense of risks. Immediate decisions which make them lose the opportunity to compete in a market are avoided in the case they feel the circumstance is uncertain. Most of the time, they want to be safe by taking less risky decisions. For African managers, it is almost the same. Middle and lower level supervisors are less willing to make decisions without deference to superiors. The result is that decision-making takes much longer than anticipated and requires more input from players at various social and professional levels. Uncertainty Avoidance measures for Africa indicate low risk taking and a resistance to change which can further delay projects which encounter problems mid-cycle. Levels of Participation in Decision-making The decision-making process involves making sense of ambiguity and taking risks (Jackson, 2003).The decision maker is working on the information available about what has already happened, what is assumed to have happened or is happening. The second aspect is future oriented (Brady, 2000). A risk is being taken because one is applying a perspective based on knowledge of the past, and projecting this to what might happen in the future if a certain course of action is followed. Chinese managers or African managers have different level of participation in decision- making. In China, decisions are participatory. Employees accept decisions handed down by their supervisors. Because of their unquestioning attitudes towards their supervisors, they resist participation in decision-making. In Africa, managers make individual decisions. They dont consult with others but can defer to their supervisors. They value personal equality. To summarize, the student can say that Chinese managers adopt the no participatory approach to decision-making. The decisions come from the higher superiors to the subordinates. However, since the reforms in China, things are changing. More and more, participatory decision-making is starting to be used in a certain number of companies. Cultural Differences in Work-group Characteristics The first difference about the work-group characteristics is the concept of brotherhood, network, family feeling which is at the heart of all Chinese interactions. In African business style which is quasi the western business style, managers focus on the deal, the possibilities, the risks and so on. There is less focus on the people they are doing business with. They may encourage their group members to learn from each other, to focus on task rather than on social and interpersonal relations, and to build the confidence required for superior performance. They make difference between personal relationship and work. In China, it is the opposite. Chinese managers may initially focus more effort on building social and interpersonal relations (Guanxi) before entering into business or contractual relationship. They would like to spend time developing and maintaining guanxi during the process of interaction and consider it as a prerequisite to do business. A good deal of time is spent exploring peoples characters. People want to know your background, your family situation, your likes and dislikes. A good deal of business is conducted in banqueting halls. Chinese believe a persons true character comes out during these moments. The only purpose during these meetings is to see a persons other side, the human side. If they are comfortable with you, and if they think they can trust you, that you can be invited to join the family, you and your business are made. Chinese managers are not interested in short term; they want long, life-long business relations. However, as the economy has become increasingly marketized, privatized and competitive, the value and effectiveness of the Guanxi system has greatly deteriorated. In industries that have been substantially deregulated or privatized, or where there is vigorous competition, business is business, and Guanxi has been neutralized or marginalized. Relationships or connections now resemble that which we find elsewhere. Cultural Differences in Motivation Systems In business contexts, the motivations of employees, partners, superiors, social associates, and members of a society spring from cultural values, or what people think is important. In order to understand how to do business with members of another culture, it is necessary to understand what motivates them, to know where to begin and what you need to cover all necessary bases. According to Aguinis (2002), employees can be rewarded according to their performance, equally, or based on their needs. In general, the equity principle is common in individualistic cultures while the equality principle is widely used in collectivistic cultures. Pay for performance and pay equity are the two main differences in motivation systems. From the 1950s until the 1980s, every aspect of Chinas economic activity was planned, controlled and operated by the government (Helen, D. 2008). There was no private ownership of any property or asset, and, consequently, no profit motive for individuals or enterprises. The government would allocate everyone a pre-defined slice of the big pie. If anyone wanted more than what was allocated to him/her, it meant circumventing that system and getting someone in that allocation chain to provide a special favour. People were obliged to sacrifice their individual interests for those of the society. Cooperation, interdependence, group goals that create group harmony are applied in China. The sense of belonging and devoting to the group are important for Chinese people. Focusing on the view that ones success is mainly based on group work; they believe that one cannot claim the reward just for oneself. Contrary to what some Chinese researchers argued on this part, the student can say while setting salaries Chinese managers will not pay more attention to the working experience and academic qualifications of employees. In that case, the equality principle is reflected in the motivation system. For African managers, individual achievement is important. They are expected to achieve success only by their individual efforts. Value competition, achievement and personal goals are their main motivations in order to have plans to recognize their individual contributions. Their success relies on their own efforts. Talents and work performance of the employees will be considered by their superiors for salary increases and promotion. Conclusion As a result, understanding other cultures is more important than ever. If we consider that people from the same economic, political, and cultural background have problems communicating effectively; we can appreciate the difficulties and challenges that people from diverse cultures face when trying to communicate. Misunderstandings will always be a part of cultural aspects. Companies need to think outside the proverbial box when formulating their business strategies and when collaborating and forming business partnerships. As sometimes companies move to do business in other countries, a greater sensitivity to culture will be required and an understanding of cultural realities should facilitate business transactions. Knowing another culture is a legitimate concern of businesses. More than that, it is essential. Those who make effort the effort to understand another culture gain knowledge about how to behave in that culture. Otherwise, if you know what people value and understand their attitudes, you wont unintentionally do something that offends and diminishes your chances for business success. In todays global businesses context, the winners are not those who study the markets they deal with even if its important but those who study people they deal with. Some evidence that implies Holdenââ¬â¢s characteristic is how he grudgingly criticizes and scorns at almost everyone he knows. After he leaves Pencey Prep School, he falls into a dilemma where he faces loneliness and depression. More so, he desperately seeks company from clubs, bars, and hotels to have someone to accompany him. The factors that affect this isolation of him are mostly because of the tragic death of his younger brother Allie and the life he has in school. He was an important person to Holden. He mentions how great and smart Allie was out of the entire family. When Stradlater told Holden to write an essay for him Holden decided that he wanted to write a paper about Allies baseball mitt, which had poems written on it and Holden still carries with him the mitt at school (38). The life he has in school is very miserable to him because he has already failed two other schools and it is happening to him again. He says that he did not mean to disappoint and hurt his parentsââ¬â¢ feelings so he takes a few days out to Edmont Hotel (59). à à à à à The tension between Holdenââ¬â¢s growing sexuality and his innocence grows much stronger throughout this section. He wants to live in a beautiful world such as the adult society, but the pressure of his emerging sexuality and the demands of his loneliness oblige him to enter into unfortunate encounters with people like Maurice and Sunny. Maurice is what makes Holden see differently of what the true adult society is, a difficult and irrational world. He is deeply affected by this, which makes him isolated from the outside world.
